Practitioners for Fathers and Families (PFF)

The fatherhood field is in disarray, and we must organize ourselves as a collective, responsible fatherhood community. A national practitioner fatherhood organization is the need of the hour.

Practitioners for Fathers and Families (PFF) is a member-supporting body with a father-focused mission, comprising grassroots fatherhood practitioners and others to form an organized national, regional, and local network. It seeks to exchange and advance ideas in fatherhood practice, research, and policy.

Previously, a national fatherhood and family practitioner network existed from 1998 to 2002, with 300 members at its peak.

It played a crucial role in getting congressional support for federal fatherhood funding by providing testimony to the House and Senate in the early 2000s.

However, the primary issue was the lack of sustainable financing, which led to its discontinuation.

A nationally organized fatherhood membership group of grassroots fatherhood organizations, practitioners, other stakeholders, and partner organizations is essential to move forward with responsible fatherhood activities. It can provide a robust collective voice on government policies and programs (local, state, and federal) focused on fathers and families to reduce child poverty.

PFF is a membership services unit of NPCL that promotes responsible fatherhood and supports programs for low-income fathers of children in fragile families by enhancing father involvement through communication, program development, education, and collaboration among service providers. NPCL, under the leadership of Dr. Jeffery Johnson, incubated and nurtured the first fatherhood practitioners network, wherein he gained valuable insights from the many lessons that will enhance the success of PFF.

Advisory Board

An Advisory Board of leaders and practitioners specializing in fatherhood works with NPCL staff on the main membership service priorities, including:

  1.  To encourage collaboration and information sharing among fatherhood and family practitioners as a part of a robust membership organization.

  2.  To promote fathers' critical role in their children's and families' lives, including providing financial, emotional, and nurturing support.

  3.  To advance understanding that father presence and engagement are crucial for reducing child poverty and creating safety and security for children and families.

  4. Provide ongoing education to key stakeholders through practitioner-generated reports and a bi-monthly newsletter featuring stories on public and privately supported local, state, and federal fatherhood and family programs.

  5. Collaborating with local, state, and national organizations that share their mission and help create strong support for fatherhood and family-related policies.

  6. Collaborate with local, state, and federal partners and members to convene fatherhood-related meetings and gatherings.

  7. Partner with organizations providing credentialing and continuing education credits to enhance the professional development of the fatherhood field.

  8. Partner with research experts and policy advocates to connect our members with the best information available as policy trends impact the fatherhood field.

  9. Connect the Responsible Fatherhood Mentoring Academy to identify fatherhood legacy leaders and assist in connecting them with emerging leaders and practitioners in the fatherhood field.

PFF is committed to becoming a valuable asset to fatherhood practitioners nationwide by focusing on these priorities.
